My tour with Charlotte Sigwedha in Mondesa, October 2004.

My name is Anne van Rest, I live in The Netherlands in Europe, and in October 2004 I spent a couple of hours with Charlotte in Mondesa.

I was lucky to be the only tourist at that time,. so we could talk a lot, I could make any question I would and Charlotte told me everything, her English was better than mine!  We walked through the different parts of Mondesa, we visited several families
and I felt very welcome.

I brought pens and cahiers and let Charlotte decide which child could have it , needed it most. I noticed that she knew a lot of people, well,  she is born in Mondesa. The fact that she is born there made for me a big difference, she knows the township from the heart and therefore she is very close to the people.  They trust her, and she knows who needs help or support.

For me it was the most touching experience in my life ( I’m 52) and when I was back home again we start to e-mail and Charlotte is the in-between person: I support a family in Mondesa and she brings the letters and other things to the family.

She also told me about a project for the people who need the most support.

Well I think Charlotte is highly qualified for the job and the fact that she is born in Mondesa, made the tour for me something I never forget in my whole life.

I’m sure I will visit her and the family in Mondesa again.

Anne van Rest.

Dear Charlotte,

Once again thank you for the fantastic tour of your local community. I
really enjoyed it. I am sending a photo of you and your lovely family who
were so welcoming.

Regards,

Hello Charlotte,

sorry for the delay in our answer. The problem is that Roby is receiving so many viruses in his mail-box that he deletes all the mails he gets without checking them properly. So, from now on, you'd
better write to me at ...

So, how is it in Namibia. I know that you have the elections for Parliament and President. When do they take place and what the people say? And your family (mother and children), are they ok? We are
showing your pictures to all our friends and they are much impressed by all of you. They all say: "Everybody is smiling". In Italy people imagine that people in Africa must be sad because they are poor, the fact is that the real poor people is us. what do you think? Here children are sad even if they have everything, and the more they have the more they are sad.

Here is summer now and it is very hot. I am in Milan, working in my office and it's terribly hot.
Yesterday I was back at home with Roby,  We live near the mountains and it is cooler there. We went to the
mountains and had a very beautiful walk. We will send you some pictures of our mountains and the snow.

As regards the computer, we haven't forgotten about it. But you prefer having the money or the computer?
I think that a computer here in Italy is much cheaper than in Namibia, let's say 1000€. The problem is the shipping, we don't know if the mail works properly in Namibia (in Italy it doesn't...) and we don't know if you have the assistance there in case something breaks or else... Tell us what you need and we will see what can we do...

now I have to start working, kisses to everybody,
Eva and Roby

Hi Charlotte
Thanks so much for a fascinating tour yesterday, I really enjoyed the
afternoon.  I learnt so much about Mondesa and the 'real' African people of
Namibia.  It was lovely to meet so many warm, genuine people and gain a
little insight into their lives.
I've attached the pictures that I took, I hope you like them.
I will send your brother an email too with some information about animation.
Thanks again for a great afternoon, best of luck for the future.

I am so sorry that I haven’t been in touch before to thank you for arranging such a fantastic holiday. The overall structure and organisation of the holiday was fantastic and the hotels in particular were delightful.

I know from running my own business how helpful feedback is so this is the Family Turner collective feedback :

WOW !
( breathtaking – as good as anywhere we have been in the world – and we have traveled a lot )

  • Muchenje – for the game viewing, friendliness, organisation and atmosphere of the lodge
  • Mowani – for the peace and beauty, stunning views, friendliness, organisation and atmosphere of the lodge
  • Cleopatra’s - for the peace and beauty, friendliness, organisation and atmosphere of the farmhouse and the FOOD !!!
  • Township tour of Swakopmund – see note below ( we’d also recommend doing the township tour in Cape Town )

Highly recommended ( this what we said to a friend of ours who is thinking of visiting S Africa – we gave him your name )

Swakopmund – Township Tours

·         An undoubted highlight of the holiday was our tour of Mondesa and the informal township in Swakopmund. The tour company is owned and run by a wonderful local woman from Mondesa called Charlotte. Charlotte and her sister took us around for an afternoon and it was great fun, informative and moving. I’d really recommend including Charlotte’s tour in any itinerary you ( or Royal Tours Namibia ) put together which includes Swakopmund. In fact it is reason enough in it’s own right to visit Swakopmund. Charlotte’s details are below and I’ll think that you’ll see from her website that she takes a very professional approach to her business.

I’m very happy to act as a reference for you if any potential client wants to talk about our experience of using you.

Thanks once again.

Best wishes

Hi Charlotte

I hope you remember us, Alistair ( Dad), Julie ( Mum ), Jack (18) and Millie (15) from England. You and your sister picked us up from the Beach House on the 5 August and took us on a tour of Mondesa. You were in two taxis as the van was not available and your brother was driving one of them.

We had a wonderful time and as promised I have emailed details of your tour ( with a glowing recommendation ) to our travel company ( Africa Travel Centre ) with a copy to Royal Tours Namibia. I’ve also sent the details to Audley Travel a company we have used before. Again I have copied you in but the person I sent it to has now left. However I have spoken to somebody else who was quite keen.

You also mentioned something about some of your money going towards a local charity. Do you have any more information on this charity?

Please pass on our love to your sister, mum, brother and Meme Angelika.

Best wishes

Alistair

dear Charlotte,
I had the luck to participate in your wonderful tour through Mondesa in Sept  during my holiday in Namibia. (The day before you travelled to Windhoek)
Thank`s a lot I enjoyed it very much and it was very informative for me. I send an e-mail to our tour-operator that he should advice your tour to all participants and I send an email to an author of travel-guidebooks about Namibia that he too should know about your tours and include the informations  in his book.
I wish you good luck.
Best wishes Anna

Charlotte,

Hi!  I've been meaning to write you an e-mail.  I've put up the photos I took during our tour, they are here:
http://greg-willis.com/gallery/Travel/Namibia06/Swakopmund-ModesaTownship/.  I'm missing a number of names, so if you have time, I'd love it if you could help me name everyone.  Also you can let me know if I got anything wrong -- we did so much, I hope I remembered everything correctly.

Hope you and your family are doing well!

-Greg
